Sorry to hear about Cookie's passing. I knew her from our days at Morris Park and she was the smartest person I knew back then. Once, at either Morris Park or Nokomis, we were in the same class taking a test and I was probably less than half done, she got up and handed her test paper in, she was already done. I heard later she got all the questions right, it was amazing. My deepest sympathies to her family.
I was also at Morris Park School with "Cookie." In our 5th grade class, Mr. Land held an auction of items we had created. He himself had made a hand puppet of Micky Mouse in a Superman outfit. Lorraine and I kept outbidding each other. In the end, I got Mickey! A fun memory of Lorraine.
I rememnber Cookie from the Morris Park Days. Reading about her many acomplisments and her involment in many great causes . As we lose more of our Class Members its amazing to me to learn of the many accompliments of the 61 Class. She was one of many that leave legacies we can all be very proud of .RIP Cookie.
Ralph Blake, being a science teacher, had a formula for everything. I remember the first day in home room in 10th grade where he told us he had a list of students and was about to assign seats we woulzd occupy for the next three years., After he read a few names the formula became pretty clear. It was alphabeticlal, by boy and girl. As he neared the middle of the list he called Bill Mahn's name.It was followed by Lorrain Rubis and Dave Mona. My fate was sealed, We were told to briefly introduce ourselves. Very brioefly, my new neighbor said, "Hi, my name's Lorraine Rubis, but my friends call me Cookie." What a great stroke of luck. She was smart, funny, friendly and everything you'd want in a neighbor. She turned out to be both a credit to our class, but also to the medical communities she served so well. We didn't stay in touch, but I'll miss her just the same.
To the family of Lorraine Rubis: I am so sorry for your loss. Cookie and I met in tenth grade biology class and we became good friends during our three years at RHS. She was a caring and loyal friend, smart, and a hard worker with a fun-loving streak. Cookie helped me get through Calculus and she got me my first real job as a waitress at the Courthouse Pharmacy and Grill. One of my favorite memories is of playing Gin Rummy with Cookie in the backroom of biology class when we were finished with our classwork. On warm sunny days we might go out the window on to the flat roof to catch the sunshine. I also remember her small, strong hands as she disected the worms and frogs in that class. I knew then that she would be a great surgeon as well as a mentor and support to others. I am only sorry that we didn't keep in touch over the years. Rest in peace dear friend.
