At the age of sixteen, she set a United States record in speed skating and was voted "Most Athletic Female" by the senior class at Roosevelt. Judy graduated from Augsburg College. She taught physical education and art at elementary, high school, and college levels. She was inducted into the Augsburg College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Music was another of her talents, playing cello in high school, college, and city orchestra.
