Mr. Cannon is well known to my entire family as I often bring him up in conversations.  That man was truly an educator with a heart!  I had him for Physics, not my best subject.  I can’t remember the number of hours he spent with me, trying to get the subject through my head. Levers and pulleys were especially hard for me and he worked with me after school on many occasions to get me through the class.  He was an imposing figure with his yardstick at the top of the stairs, making sure none of us went up the down staircases or vice versa, always with a twinkle in his eyes.  I was so disappointed that he didn’t feel well enough to come to our 50th reunion - he was the one teacher I especially wanted to see.  My deepest sympathy to his family on his loss.  He will always remain a cherished memory for me of my years at RHS.  A great man!

So very sorry to read about Mr. Cannon.  He was a great teacher and friend.  I will always remember him walking across to my home room banging that yard stick.  Many fun times and memories.  My condolences to his family.

Never had him for a class. Remember him doing hallway and stairway patrol with a meter stick (not a yard stick). After all he taught science.

I am not sure if Mr. Cannon felt he realized all his dreams and professional aspirations, but he certainly attained one of highest achievments of all....he was a teacher, and thus, a true inspiration to many of us whose lives he touched with his grace, humor, intellect, curiosity, challenge, and genunine love for his students...He was, and will always be, our Teacher.... I was fortunate to be at the Roosevelt Hall of Fame awards in 2018 when Mr. Cannon was honored. He spoke about how he came to RHS and what a privilege it was to teach there. He was moved to tears as he recollected those times and the fact that he was now being recognized in this way. A photo of the Award gathering with him in the middle is now in his Profile

Thank you to Paul for posting the picture of the 2018 RHS Hall of Fame inductees.  It includes Al Cannon, Mary Tjsovold and Paul Sorlie.  It was a special night.  I never had Mr. Cannon as a teacher, but I got to know him through the Mpls. Federation of Teachers Union when we were both teaching in the Minneapolis School District.

Mr Cannon was my tenth grade Biology teacher. I remember him as one who made personal contact and knew when more help was needed. He made the class fun through humor engaging students in lots of interesting challenges.   As others have said , he had great intuition concerning each of us and contributed a great deal to RHS. Thank you to a great teacher! My sincere condolences to his family.     Marlyce K. Benson (Bjeldanes)

I had Mr. Cannon for biology in 10th grade and got a "D" on the first quiz.  He called me to his desk  and said he wanted me to outline each chapter before the  quizzes and tests.  From that point on, I never got less than a "B".  It was too bad I didn't take his advice and do that for the rest of my classes.  He was a great teacher and I wish I would have had him for more classes.  I wish the best for his family and I know he wll be greatly missed.

Yes Al Cannon was a great teacher and friend. I remember the yard stick so well.  Some of us students would wait just outside the threshold of the door with Mr. Cannon standing there with with his stick...we would jump over the threshold as the bell rang.  I think he was laughing inside not to let us know. He, Ralph Blake and Sam Johnson would tease me and  pull  be out of class with a little black book that  had with my initials on it.  They wanted to know who I was dating to record in the book!  Bless him!!!

While I never had Al Cannon as a teacher, I certainly knew who he was. As I'd pass him in the hallway he'd smile and say, "So, how are we going to do against Washburn tomorrow night? I didn't even think he knew who I was, but he seemed to know almost everyone who passed by whille observing the up and down staircase rules. While he always had that stick in his hand (as did all the science teachers) I never made the mistake of referrsing to it as a "yard sitck." I had Ralph Blake for homeroom. On the first morning in 10th grade he slammed it against a bench and said, "Take a look at this. It's a meter stick, not a yard stick. The sooner you learn that the better off you'll be." Lesson well learned.
