I am so sad to read about the passing of Dennis.  We had so much fun talking about hockey, we even went to a Minneapolis-St. Paul game and I thought he might get pressed into duty when the goalie for Minneapolis was injured.  Prayers for his family, and I look forward to seeing you in heaven Dennis.  Your friend always.  Roberta Smith

So sorry to hear- this is getting really sad ! Knew Denny at Keewaydin and Nokomis too!  Part of the gang at Nokomis and lots of fun times!  Blessings to family; know this is a hard time. !

Denny was first of all a Viet Nam war hero and I think it took a lot out of him. He had a tough experience over there.

He loved to play hockey. We would go out to the Golden Valley Ice Center at 1AM or some other ridiculous time in the summer and play pick up games. We would play hockey on the tennis courts in the middle of summer and it was a great time. He once was attenting a St Paul Saints game and their goalie got injured. He ran down to the dressing room and suited up and finished the game. The Saints won!!!

He was very ill the past few years and I didn't see him much , but we talked on the phone now and then.

He was a great guy and I'll miss him.

I was saddened to hear about Dennis Rust's death.  I am equally saddened to read of the difficulty he experienced while fighting in Vietnam and the years after he returned home.  Thankfully, we are now more sensitive to the problems of returning veterans and assisting them in the healing process.  His death is a sad reminder of those that sacrificed their youth and carried the baggage and memories of war they carried afterwards.  My sympathy to his family and close friends. Reading the comments, it makes me sad that we do not know peoples stories.  So few of us share our stories-good and bad!  Thank you Ron for keeping in touch with so many of the guys and sharing stories.  Actually, my newest pet peace is going to funerals and reading obituaries if friends and not knowing their stories and what the have experienced!  We need to talk to our friend more!!!

I started this several minutes ago but it got lost I don't know how.  I did not know Dennis but really identified with Barb Hoglund Newberry's comment that we really often do not take the time to relate our real stories with one another.

Ron Naslund, thank you for your comments which told a little more about Dennis and his life.  Hockey players seen to be special and wholesome.  He had a twinkle in his eye and I guess endured Viet Nam and an illness with grace and fortitude. Blessings of peace, joy, love, patience and grace to all his loved ones.  Every life is precious and especially to our Creator.

Be patient with your thoughts and emotions, connect with those who knew him and above all trust the God of this universe for healing and renewed joy.  Honor him with your speech.

You all can be in my prayers even though I don't personally know you.

Take good care

Jan Butler, a classmate
